# About us

GraceDNS is built and operated by botBrains GmbH, a small, self-funded software company in Berlin, Germany. The service is currently designed, developed and run by one person, Liam van der Viven, which we consider a feature for you to know rather than hide: our compliance pages tell you exactly who has access to what.

## Why we built GraceDNS

DNS filtering is one of the highest-leverage protections available: one setting on a router or phone, and every app on every device stops resolving known-malicious, unwanted or age-inappropriate domains. Existing options force a choice between running your own hardware (Pi-hole), trusting large ad-funded companies, or paying enterprise prices. We wanted a protective DNS service that is:

- **European by design**: all data on servers in Germany, GDPR-native, no third-country transfers
- **Private by default**: individual configurations log nothing unless you turn logging on
- **Honest**: we document [what DNS filtering cannot do](limitations.md) as prominently as what it can, and our [compliance page](../legal/compliance.md) never claims a control we do not have
- **Fast and simple**: a single efficient binary, encrypted DNS out of the box, setup in minutes
